"For this project, I have decided to look at the Human body and the problems faced with trying to draw or paint it. It is very difficult to draw the human form accurately. When you look at a body you don't notice the things that might make it look odd in a painting. Foreshortening makes drawings look inaccurate, as does the positions we sit or stand in. However if you try to draw it to look how you think it should look, it's worse. For this reason I am painting my bodies to look deformed and twisted. This way I get past the problems faced with life drawing. The main inspiration for this project came from the video 'Rubber Johnny' by Aphex Twin. In this video a deformed man, who is hideously out of proportion dances to the tune, but it's so fast that everything is blurred and it makes him look like his limbs are in the wrong place. I wanted to create paintings of bodies that look out of proportion and like a blur of body parts. I have also looked at German expressionists, such as: Max Kaus, Kathe Kollwitz, Ludwig Meidner and also Francis Bacon. These artists didn't preoccupy themselves with painting or drawing figures accurately and as such, some of them are quite grotesque. I am choosing to do the paintings in colours not normally associated with skin. I don't want this project to be about deformities so these colours make the subjects look even less human."
